How to meal plan without making it a job

Meal planning has a reputation: binders, spreadsheets, an hour of browsing and a plan abandoned by Thursday. The fix is not more discipline. It is a shorter loop: describe your household once, approve a week, shop one list. Here is the whole method, and how Repast runs it for you.

The Repast plan screen: the week of August 29 to September 2, with Steakhouse-Style Bavette Steak enlarged as the next dinner and the rest of the week in a rail below it.

The four steps

1. Tell it about your household, once

Everything the plan needs fits in four short answers: who is eating (any size from 1 to 8), what can never appear (up to ten allergens held as unbreakable rules, plus diet), which day you shop, and which nights you actually cook. Add a weeknight time ceiling if the clock rules your evenings. This is setup, not homework. You do it one time, and every future week already knows it.

2. Review a week of real dinners

Seconds later there is a week on the screen, drawn from a catalog of 10,000+ published recipes: dishes with their own photography, source ratings, honest prep times and yields that were actually tested. Each card carries one sentence about why it is there: it fits your Tuesday ceiling, it reuses Monday’s produce, it is a cuisine you have been loving. You are reviewing, not researching.

3. Negotiate in plain English

The week is a draft until you say otherwise. “More veg.” “Nothing heavy on Wednesday.” “Keep the steak, redo the rest.” Requests become visible constraint chips, pins protect what you like, and a drag moves a dish to a different night. However you push it around, your allergen rules travel with every change, and a substitution can never sneak past them.

4. Shop one list, cook all week

Tap to build the part most people meal plan for: a grocery list that has already done the adding. Garlic wanted by three dinners is one row with one total, computed on your phone. At the stove, cook mode runs each recipe one step at a time with the display kept awake and timers pulled straight out of the instructions, and the whole confirmed week works with no signal at all.

Why this beats the binder

Each new request can draw on your favorites, recent dinners, and feedback from the journal. Repast does the recipe hunting with that history and your current preferences in view. You keep the final say: use the AI meal planning assistant to ask for a different dish or reshape the week in your own words.

The whole loop, in numbers. One sentence about your household. One sitting to approve the week. One grocery trip, from one list. Zero accounts, zero recipe browsing, zero blank pages.

What the method runs on

The numbers under the four steps.

10,000+published recipes the planner selects from; it never invents a dish
1grocery list per week, totaled on your phone, one row per ingredient
10allergens held as hard rules no proposal or chat request can weaken
30 minmedian prep time across the catalog, so weeknight ceilings actually hold

Meal planning questions

How do I start meal planning?

Start smaller than the internet suggests: plan dinners only, for one week, around the day you already shop. That is the entire scope Repast is built for. Install it, answer four short questions about your household, and a full week arrives for you to react to, which is a much easier job than composing one from a blank page. Reacting takes about a minute. Composing is why most meal planning attempts die by Wednesday.

What is the best way to meal plan for the week?

Start with your shopping day and cooking nights. Repast's AI selects dinners around your tastes, dietary settings, household size, and available cooking time. Review the menu, ask for any changes, and build the grocery list. The amounts are totaled, one row per ingredient, with quantities computed on your phone.

How does AI meal planning work in Repast?

You describe the household, and a planning agent selects dishes from a fixed catalog of published recipes using your allergen rules, diet, household size and time ceiling. Favorites, recent meals, and meal feedback give later planning requests more personal context. Grocery quantities are computed by a deterministic engine on your phone, separately from the AI that chooses the dishes.

How much time does meal planning take this way?

Repast chooses the recipes and assembles the week. Your part is looking over the menu and asking for any changes you want. You can accept the week as it arrives; there is no recipe search or empty calendar to fill first. The confirmed plan, grocery list and recipe steps download to your phone, ready for the store and kitchen even without a signal.

Do I have to find recipes myself?

No, and that is the step this method deletes. Browsing for recipes is the part that makes meal planning feel like homework, so Repast inverts it: dishes are proposed to you, each with a reason, and your job is a yes, a no, or a request in plain English. The catalog holds 10,000+ published recipes with their own photography, so what you approve is what arrives on the plate.

What do I need to get started?

An iPhone and one sentence about your household. There is no account, no sign-up form and nothing to import: install the app, answer the four setup questions, and the first week is on screen within a minute, ready to shop and cook. Your plans, lists and photos stay on the device and sync only through your own iCloud, so getting started never involves handing over an email address. The whole loop happens on the first day, not after a week of configuration.

Four steps. Seven dinners.

Describe your household once and let Repast choose the dinners. Approve the week and walk into the store with your grocery list already totaled. No account needed.

No account to create. iOS 17 or later.
