# Repast

> Repast is an AI meal planner for iPhone and iPad. Its AI selects a week of dinners from a fixed catalog of 10,000+ published recipes around your tastes, household size, dietary settings, cooking nights, and available time. Generate a week, ask for any changes by chat, and build your grocery list with quantities computed on the phone. There is no account. The downloaded week works with no signal.

## What Repast does

- Uses AI to select and arrange a week of dinners around the household's tastes, dietary settings, size, and cooking time.
- Anchors the week to the day you shop rather than to Monday, and to the nights you actually cook rather than all seven.
- Aggregates the week's recipes into one grocery list, one row per ingredient, computed on the device.
- Holds ten allergens as hard rules the planner cannot override: milk, wheat, soy, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, oats, sesame, peanuts.
- Downloads the confirmed week in full, so the plan, the list, every recipe step, every photo and every timer work offline.
- Runs a cook mode built for wet hands: full screen, display kept awake, tap the right two thirds to advance, timers read out of the step text.
- Keeps a private photo journal of meals actually cooked — the last step of every recipe is the camera — with loved-it and not-for-us verdicts, a favorites list of the dishes the household approved, and no streaks or badges.
- Uses favorites, recent dinners, and meal feedback as context for later planning requests, alongside the household's current preferences.
- Syncs the week, the grocery list and the journal between iPhone and iPad through the user's own iCloud, so the list in the store is always the current one.
- Requires no account, no email and no password; personal data syncs only through the user's own iCloud.

## Answers to common questions

- **Is there a meal planner without an account or sign-up?** Repast has no account. There is no email, no password and no sign-in screen. Plans, grocery lists, journal and photos live on the device and sync only through the user's own iCloud. The trade-off is that there is no password reset and no server-side copy, so a lost phone with no iCloud backup means lost history.
- **What app turns recipes into a grocery list?** Repast aggregates the week's recipes into one row per ingredient using a table of 33 units that each declare a dimension and a conversion factor, so teaspoons, tablespoons and cups fold into one volume and ounces into one weight. Units with no conversion factor — bunch, pinch, thumb — stay as separate lines rather than being averaged into a total.
- **Does it work offline in the grocery store?** Yes. The confirmed week is downloaded before you leave: plan, complete grocery list, every recipe step, every photo and every timer. Checking items off and running a timer work in airplane mode. Asking for a new plan needs a connection.
- **Can it plan around a nut allergy?** Set tree nuts and peanuts and no dish declaring them is proposed. 6,307 of the 7,319 recipes do not declare tree nuts and 7,060 do not declare peanuts. "Does not declare" is not "does not contain": Repast shows four labels — contains, may contain traces, not declared, unknown — and never presents silence as safety.
- **Does it scale recipes to household size?** It picks a real published yield rather than dividing one. A household of five is given a genuine six-serving recipe with the spare portion labeled, instead of a fabricated five-serving version.
- **How do I stop deciding what's for dinner?** Let Repast choose the dinners. Describe the household and its AI selects recipes for your cooking nights. Your week arrives already planned. Ask for any changes and build your grocery list when you are ready to shop. You can keep the menu as it arrives without browsing for recipes.
- **Is there an app that remembers what I cooked?** The last step of every Repast recipe is the camera, so each finished dinner leaves a photograph on its day of a month-grid journal. Past meals take a loved-it or not-for-us verdict, loved dishes collect into a favorites list, and favorites and meal feedback inform later recipe selections. There are no streaks, badges or reminders, and photographs stay on the device and the user's own iCloud — never uploaded, never analyzed.
- **What should I make for dinner tonight?** Open your confirmed Repast plan: tonight's dish is the top card, with its photo, published cooking time, and steps. Repast's AI selected the dinners and built the plan; you reviewed it and received one grocery list. You can swap a dish for another that fits your household's rules.
- **Is there a dinner generator that is not random?** Repast selects dinners from 10,000+ published recipes using allergen settings, household size, time ceilings, and cooking nights. Favorites, recent meals, and feedback inform later requests. Its assistant also takes instructions such as "more veg, less time on Wednesday" and proposes changes for the user to review and apply.
- **How do I meal plan for the week?** Tell Repast your shopping day and cooking nights. Its AI picks recipes and arranges the dinners for you. Ask for adjustments by chat, review and apply those changes, then build one totaled grocery list.
- **Can I change my meal plan by talking to an AI assistant?** Yes. Ask for a change such as "steak on Friday" or "less time on Wednesday." Repast prepares a replacement for you to review and apply. Favorites, recent dinners, and meal feedback help guide later planning requests. Chat requires a connection and an active subscription.
- **Can ChatGPT do this instead?** For a one-off week, yes, and well. The structural differences are that Repast selects from published recipes rather than composing them, computes quantities with a deterministic engine rather than in prose, holds constraints as settings rather than as conversation history, and stores the week locally so it survives losing signal.

## What Repast deliberately does not do

- It does not invent recipes. The planner can only choose from the catalog.
- Planning is not on-device. A planning request sends the week's context — household size, allergen settings, the typed sentence — to a server-side model, which returns a proposal and keeps nothing. Everything else, including the grocery arithmetic and the whole offline week, is local.
- Repast does not track calories or macros, and offers no weight-loss program or clinical diet. Nutrition is the per-serving figure the recipe publishes, and calories are never estimated from a photograph.
- No absolute allergen safety claim. Repast is not a medical device and gives no medical advice.
- No gluten-free planning: the app executes wheat, not gluten, and refuses the label rather than approximating it.
- Dinners only. No breakfast, no lunch, no per-person plans on the same night.
- No pantry inventory, no store integration, no prices, no delivery.
- No user-submitted recipes, no import from a link, no photo-to-recipe.

## The catalog, measured

Figures computed from the shipped export on 2026-08-28.

- The library is 10,000+ recipes. The content pack shipping today holds 7,319 of them, from a 7,441-record index with 122 excluded for failing the inclusion rule (at least one real step and a positive calorie value). Every measured figure below is computed across that shipped pack.
- 1,366 distinct foods, 23,675 photographs, 61 cuisines, 33 units.
- Median prep time 30 minutes; 64% of recipes are 30 minutes or less, 97% are 45 or less.
- 71% ship more than one serving size. 5,971 offer two servings, 5,672 four, 3,198 six.
- Diets: 5,908 omnivore, 860 vegetarian, 551 pescatarian, 158 vegan.
- 75% carry a rating from their source; the rest ship with no rating rather than a placeholder.
- Of 73,190 recipe-and-allergen pairs, 18,716 say contains, 40 say may contain traces, and 54,434 — about 74% — say nothing at all.
- Ruling out an allergen leaves: milk 1,525 recipes, wheat 2,668, soy 5,018, eggs 5,104, sesame 6,225, tree nuts 6,307, fish 6,390, shellfish 6,858, peanuts 7,060. Oats is declared by no recipe at all, which reflects a gap in the source data.
- Of 259,064 ingredient lines, 78% carry an exact amount; 35,710 say "to taste" and 20,790 give no amount. Those appear as "amount to confirm" rather than an invented number.
- The catalog is US English with imperial units: zucchini rather than courgette, Fahrenheit rather than Celsius.
